Join us for two evenings exploring hip-hop — not only as a musical genre but as a rich cultural heritage and powerful social movement. Four panel discussions will highlight different aspects of the culture: archiving, the role of the DJ, and activism. Each evening will conclude with a special live performance by our guests.
This series is a collaboration between Foundation Amsterdam Hiphop Centre, ITA, Re/presenting Europe, and Culture Capsule.
Hip-Hop is Heritage
The Importance of Archiving
Many of us have items at home that tell the story of the Dutch hip-hop scene: audio and video recordings, flyers, photos, and merchandise. Culture Capsule collects these stories, supports individuals in building their own archives, and makes knowledge, narratives, and information digitally accessible to anyone interested in the rich history of hip-hop in the Netherlands.
Through a network of hip-hop hubs, urban living rooms, researchers, and creators, we are building a collective memory — one that is made by and for hip-hop culture. This way, we maintain control over our heritage and ensure that the most important moments are preserved and passed on to the next generation.
Contribute to Archiving Hip-Hop Culture!
Imagine this: you could archive one item, one moment, or one story from your personal history in Dutch hip-hop. What would it be? Maybe a flyer from a local party that meant a lot to you? A turntable where you first honed your skills? That one record or an old VHS tape you've held on to?
Bring that item or story to the discussion. During the panel, we'll talk about it: what did you bring? What does it mean to you? And where does it fit within the history of Dutch hip-hop?
If you’re interested, you can have your object digitized afterward by Sherlock Telgt (head of the archive). Please indicate when registering if you’d like to participate — Sherlock will then explain everything about the archive and the current participants.
